Nightwish is one of the most internationally successful Finnish bands. Tuomas Holopainen has described Nightwish's music as sinfonic metal which sounds about right. Their former vocalist Tarja Turunen is trained as a classical singer.

In 2005 Tarja Turunen and Nightwish parted ways when Turunen was fired from the band. Speculations about the reason ran pretty wild, from a one-sided romance to money and greed. Swedish Anette Olzon joined the band in 2007 as their new singer. Since Turunen was a big part of the band and some fans remained loyal to her, Olzon's job hasn't been easy, but she has managed well.

Their new album is expected in the fall of 2011. Their newest album thus far, Dark Passion Play, has sold 1,8 million copies world wide. They have also released a special Lokikirja box, which includes all of their studio albums and a few singles.
